What the romance scam check is

It is a solicitor-led investigation of the person you are talking to, done without his knowledge, delivered as a plain-English report. Our in-house investigators take every checkable claim he has made, his name, his photographs, the business he says he owns, the qualifications, the career, the divorce, the address, and test it against the record: the registers, the open internet, the traces every real life leaves and every invented life lacks. Where something can only be verified with his cooperation, the report says so, and tells you exactly what to ask him for, so even that conversation happens on your terms.

You receive a colour-coded summary and a clear bottom line: verified as described, or unverified and high risk, with every finding explained. Some reports come back reassuring, and that is a good outcome, the relationship carries on minus the doubt. The ones that do not have saved clients many times the cost of the check.

What a report looks like: a real check, anonymised

In June this year we were asked to verify a man who described himself as the managing director of a bioengineering consultancy in south London, with an engineering background at a leading university and a professional certificate from a named international body. He had a profile, a photograph, a career history. Everything looked plausible, which is exactly the problem: a profile being online does not make it true.

Almost every claim failed the check. There was no company registered under the name he traded on, in any spelling, and no directorship anywhere that matched him. A consultancy supposedly established for decades had no website, no clients, no mention anywhere. The one specific credential on his profile was provably false twice over: listed against the wrong issuing body, with a date years before the certificate scheme existed. The profile photograph showed a man in full lab gear, face hidden by equipment. No posts, ever.

Our conclusion, in the report's own words: treat the subject as unverified and high risk, and do not rely on his claims without hard documents. The report closed with the three documents to ask him for, a company number, a certificate reference, a consented degree check, so that the client's next conversation with him happened on the client's terms, not his. The catfishing and identification work behind the check

Can he find out that I checked?

No. The check is built from public sources, records and the material you give us; we do not contact him, alert him or leave traces he could find. The only exception is consent-based verification, which we would only ever suggest openly, as a request you make to him yourself.

Is it wrong to check up on someone I am falling for?

We would gently turn the question round: is it wrong for him to expect your trust, your savings and your future while telling you things that cannot be verified? A genuine partner loses nothing from being checked. Most of our clients say the report gave them back something the doubt had taken away, whichever way it came out.

What do you need from me?
